On August 6, 2023, Birzeit University’s Department of Architecture and Planning conducted a training workshop in Hebron under the title “Proximity & Spatial Re-use”. The event was hosted at Uncle Saleh’s Restaurant.
The workshop covered a diverse range of topics aimed at enhancing the concept of low-cost spatial reuse and capitalizing on the economic and environmental opportunities it offers. Specialized lectures, interactive discussions, and practical exercises were presented on the following subjects:
- “LCARS: What and why?” A comprehensive introduction to the LCARS concept and its significance in achieving sustainability and promoting the circular economy philosophy.
- “Designing for Adaptive Reuse: Exploring Circular Economy Strategies” Shedding light on circular economy strategies applied in the design of projects based on spatial reuse.

The workshop garnered significant interest from small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Participants expressed their utmost satisfaction with the content, discussions, and active engagement throughout the event.
At the workshop’s conclusion, the SMEs issued recommendations aimed at promoting low-cost spatial reuse. These recommendations seek to foster innovation and sustainable design to achieve sustainable development in the old city while preserving its architectural and cultural heritage.
Such educational activities aim to inspire environmental conservation and resource optimization through sustainable approaches and emphasize the importance of spatial reuse as an impactful means of cost reduction and achieving sustainable development.
